Sermon About Spiritual Gifts

Biblical Teachings About Spiritual Gifts
Text: 1 Corinthians 12:1-11

Introduction
Last time, we talked about the Lord’s supper. We have learned the Lord’s Supper is a Christian practice, which also has become a tradition instituted by Christ himself. And this practice is not to be taken lightly. Doing this in an unworthy manner makes us guilty of sinning against the body and the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Today, we will be talking about another area where sometimes we put Christ to the test. One of the major divisions that we have in our world today is due to what we call “Pentecostalism”. There are various groups of pentecostals that practices the so called “giftings”. Actually, all Christian churches practice this, however, the highlight comes between the “supernatural” and the “natural” practices of giftings.

Pentecostals are more inclined in the supernaturals while people like us are more inclined to the natural things that God gave. At first, boom of this movement, almost everybody accepted it. But, years after, a schism broke out and great disputes between Christians arises. All that because of the practice of these giftings.

Today, we will be learning the principles given by Paul here in 1Corinthians, addressing to this issue. And perhaps you may also be wondering why there are people like the pentecostals who practice the giftings, and there are people like us who prefers to be living in a natural way. May this sermon be a blessing to each one of us as we also increase in wisdom in Christ.

4 Principles Underlying Spiritual Gifts

* .No one say “Jesus Is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit (v.3)
* There are different kinds of gifts but the same Spirit, different kinds of service but the same Lord, different kinds of working but the same God. (v.4-6)
* Each one was given different kinds of manifestation of his gifts for common good (v.7-10)
* He gave each one different gifts just as he determines (v.11)

Sermon About Propriety In Worship And Lord’s Supper

Propriety In Worship Is Needed In Our Churches

I always believe that we need to be proper in facing God especially if we believe that he is the King of kings and Lord of lords. Honoring God is a valuable thing to learn in the way we speak, act, and even present ourselves before him.

In our world today, younger generations already took for granted what it means to be proper in God’s sight. Many of them just face Him without giving due respect.I hope this sermon will in somehow open the eyes of many especially our young generation.

Propriety In Worship
Text: 1 Corinthians 11

Introduction
Last week, we talked about things that happened to Israelites to be an example for us. And in the evening, we have talked about one of those things, which is idolatry.

Today, we will be talking about testing the Lord in terms of propriety in worship. Many Christians nowadays have already neglected propriety in worship. Today, you will see the young generation who comes in the church lacking some respect in the way they present themselves to God.

It is very important that at younger age, we have to learn how to respect God in every way, even in the way we dress and in the way we look.

Sermon About Idolatry

Idolatry Examined
Text: 1 Corinthians 10:14-33

Introduction
Last time, we have discussed about the things that the Israelites did during the time of Moses. And because of those things that they did, God gave judgment over their sinful acts.

Starting today, we will be talking concerning those things that they have committed. And we will start about the issue of idolatry.

Similarity of Idol Feast and The Lord’s Supper (v.14-22)

In 1 Corinthians 8, we already have discussed that there is no other God but one. That the food sacrificed to idols is nothing more than food. However, in these few verses Paul is explicitly making a comparison of what it looks like when we give in ourselves to things that the world do abusively.

Starting in verse 14, Paul is making a comparison about the Lord’s supper and partaking of those foods sacrificed to idols. The food is nothing but a food. The idols are nothing, they have no power and they cannot do anything against a person. This is in contrast to what other people believes that images and idols have the power to repel against dark powers. The Bible says they DO NOT have any power.

However, the main idea of this part of our passage is that, eating food sacrificed to idols has the picture of participating with the demons. Again, the idols itself and the food cannot do anything to harm us, but the picture of joining people who eat food sacrificed to idols has the picture of participating in the works of the devil.

This is why there are people who stumble in seeing a fellow brother in Christ eating food sacrificed to idols and in our culture includes drinking alcoholic beverages and participating to disco. Please see my article: Why Alcohol Drinking Is Not For Christians.

Verse 21 it says that we “Cannot” drink the cup of the Lord and drink the cup of demons, we cannot take part in the table of the Lord and take part in the table of demons. But can we still do it anyway if we like it? The answer is yes. However, verse 22 gave us a question to answer, “Are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we really stronger than he is?”
