Sermon About Immorality

The sermon below is all about the truths of immorality and how it affects the church.

Title: About Immorality
Text: 1 Corinthians 5

Introduction
For the past few Sundays, I have talked about the works of a servant of Christ. We have also touched about one of the main problems of the Corinthian Church, the division inside the Church.

Today, we will be talking about another problem, Immorality. Immorality is one of the most common sins that we have in our time. There are lots of forms of immorality. We have incests, adultery, homosexuality, abortion, etc.

Adultery, one of the most common problems of our society. Instead of building up families, because of extra marital relationship, people tend to destroy their wonderful family. Before, most offenders are men, but now women has become equally aggressive when it comes to adultery.

Homosexuality. Before, homosexuality is a form of “disgrace” among the society. Today, it is now becoming a “norm”, a way of life, a choice. This is because of the mass media. Blockbuster hit movies now are about homosexuality. A pretty good example is the upcoming movie, “In My Life” , having a ground breaking record of Php20,000,000 gross sales for just a premier night.

How about abortion? Some other countries now are trying to eliminate the population problem through abortion. And the government itself is implenting this program.

In our passage today, we will be talking about truths about immorality.

Truths About Immorality

Immorality is something to be grieved about (v.1-5)

In the passage, the immorality committed was an incest. Such kind of immorality is completely not acceptable in the society. And such emphasis can be seen in the statement of Paul; “a kind that does not occur even among pagans”. The offense was that, a man has his father’s wife.

The passage is could possibly mean that a man had a relationship with his stepmother instead of the mother. This is because Paul used “father’s wife” instead of “his mother”. In any way, we are assured that it is still a form of incest.

What’s bothering in the situation was that, the audience or the people who knows it seems to be even proud of it. Probably the sinning man is boasting about it and the Corinthian Church is doing nothing to stop such an act. For this, Paul recommends that the Corinthian Church should not be proud of it, instead to grieve for it and that such man should be “put out” of the fellowship.

Then another radical statement that Paul gave. He is instructing the Corinthian Church on the next thing to do, that is if they have assembled together, and that Paul was with them in the spirit (because Paul has already passed judgement on that immorality in v.3), and that the Spirit of the Lord was with them, they are to “hand this man over” to Satan. This is to destroy its sinful nature and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord.

Let us note here that there is a purpose in handing the man over to Satan. That is to destroy the sinful nature, but to save the spirit on the day of the Lord. As I am trying to think about it, this could probably mean the intercessory prayer or something like an imprecatory prayer. And here, we can see some harsh statements of Paul.

Immorality is something that can affect others (v.6-8).

Now Paul uses here another metaphor here. He used the “yeast” in two sense. The first is that the sinning brother can affect the whole dough, “Get rid of the old yeast that you maybe a new batch without yeast.” To which could mean, to “hand over to Satan” the sinful man. In other words, to disfellowship the sinful man.

By reading the preceeding paragraph and the latter paragraph, Paul deal with his statements corporately, as a body. The first paragraph is an instruction about coming together of the congregation and handing over the sinful man to Satan.

The second interpretation is that the yeast is about the sin. “But just like the bread of the Pass Over, we need to put off the yeast of malice and wickedness so that we can be pure, without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.” Now we are seeing that the sin is referring to sinful things such as malice and wickedness.

This is an opportunity therefore to ask God for forgiveness and guidance. For us to be pure from malice and wickedness.

Rethinking the Church by J.P. Leo Castillo

Nowadays, when a well-meaning friend or acquaintance asks me,

“Where do you go to church?”

I often catch myself groping hard for a non-controversial answer. Because to me, this question reveals an almost unquestioned assumption that church refers to building or to an event held once a week, often on a Sunday, and normally called a “worship service.” But is that really the church?

In his book Organic Churches, Neil Cole says that this same question reminds us about the Samaritan woman’s question in John 4:20-24 to Jesus. The Samaritan woman’s concern was about the place of worship. Neil Cole says “where” is the wrong question to ask. The right question is “who?” We do not need to go and seek God in some special place. He has been seeking us right where we are. I have come to the conclusion that church happens where Jesus and His people are – not in one fixed location on a single day of the week.

In recent years I have tried to look at the New Testament church as described in Acts and the Epistles through fresh lenses – to try to understand it without the assumptions that accompany contemporary church practices. This was easier said than done and I still have much to learn (and unlearn). But life is a journey and with it the ongoing discovery and application of God’s plans and purposes for His people. We can only begin to act on what the Lord has revealed to us thus far.

Keeping Your Church Body Balanced

When we started to focus to only one or two spiritual gifts and we negligently do not give attention with our other ministries, our strongest spiritual gift will become our weakest. We have to understand that the church is a body of Christ. And the body of Christ is composed of many parts. Thus, we have to maintain the functionality of the church body parts balanced.

Spotting Wolves In Your Church

Characteristics Of Wolves In The Church

Sharp Teeth – He or she appears to be very friendly, they wear sheep’s clothes, sound like sheeps, but later on they will start biting the church by their canine teeth by criticizing some church programs and the pastor. And one by one, members will start disintegrating and some will start thinking the same as these wolves.

Pointed Ears – He or she have an excellent hearing ability enough to hear the criticism of the leaders and set some private meeting with some of the members and the main topic is all about the leader’s fault and mistakes. And the worst thing is, they will even try to encourage you to pray for your leader to sow some doubts.

Padded Paws – They have sharp paws which they use to steal. They don’t use the doors, nor have any respect to the owner. The same is true about inside the Church. The wolves inside the church does not seek advice nor recognizes the authority of leaders.

New Church New Congregation In A New Culture

We have to consider in building a congregation that reproduce within the culture. This is a dynamic process where you won’t even know how will the Holy Spirit work within the culture.

There is no strict nor book by book instruction that we have to use in order to do this. As pastors, church planters, church leaders, we have to be innovative, open for possibilities and adjustments in case our current ministries is not working well. This should be [jtb2246] done by trusting the Holy Spirit and allow Him to work through the life of the Church.

God then will allow you as a church planter to see whom you should be working with. Having the right people in your core group in starting a church can really help you boost at the first few months.

Organic Church Movement Is Not A New Paradigm

I have read some blogs that are very cautious towards organic church movement. Of course everybody can always express their opinions. However, when I started to read these blogs, I think that it just seems that they were not able to grasp the main idea of Organic Church Movement.

First and foremost, Organic Church Movement is not another paradigm shift but it is a shift of going back towards the Biblical practices of worship, going back to the New Testament church ways. It is not “another new thing”, but going back to the Bible. This is similar to reformation though the big difference is, we are now living in a non violent world towards reformation.

Secondly, Organic Church Movement is not intended nor confined to merely house churches. Yes, we promote house churches, we promote simple worship that are Biblical, but it does not mean that true worship should be confined only in house churches. For starting churches, yes, we are to meet in the houses. But as these group grows continuously, time will come that a house will not be enough. So it will again have to move to another step which is to really to have a place of gathering where they fit.

After this, it is expected that the organic church will multiply itself. This is when the church is able to send out workers to start another church and even churches. The idea is, within an organic church, all the members are involve in evangelism, sharing the gospel to others and to other ministries. Thus, not only that the organic church movement is confined towards quantity focus, but especially to the quality.
