The Father’s Good Gifts

“If you, then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father, which is in Heaven, given good things to them that ask Him?”

Matthew 7:11

A gift is that which is freely given

From one person to another;

There are no strings attached or a hook inside

When given by a friend or brother.

No, gifts are given to express one’s love

To someone who may not deserve them;

They’re given on purpose by the one who gives,

Not because of pressure or momentary whim.

Sometimes they’re large; sometimes they’re small.

But it doesn’t matter to the one who receives—

For he knows if they are given in heartfelt love

There’s never any attempt to manipulate or deceive.

But, even when we give such gifts to others,

Whether a parent, child or friend,

None of our gifts can compare to those of God,

Who loves us more than we can ever comprehend.

Although we’re sinful and often grieve His Heart,

By the things we say and do,

He continues to love us just the same

By giving His Son and Heaven, too.

His gifts may not seem much at all

To those who love the treasures of this earth;

But those who know Him as Father and Friend

Know it’s His Gift that gives us worth.

To the sorrowful, He gives comfort;

To the fearful, Hope so dear—

By reminding us His Gift is that which keeps on giving

Because of His Presence always so near.

All other gifts will one day give way

To moth and rust and thieves;

But, His Gift will never fade away

From the moment we simply believe.
