Christian Discipleship – What It Is And What It Is Not?

Christian Discipleship

Christian Discipleship In the form of story telling

Christian Discipleship is basically making disciples of Christ. That’s why it was called “christian” discipleship, is because the central theme is all about Christianity whose main theme is Christ.

We can summarize it as follows:

  • It is letting others know about Christ.
  • It is helping those who have known Christ to obey Christ’s command.
  • It is helping those Christians to grow spiritually mature in Christ.
  • It is teaching others to become disciplers as well.
  • It is the act of Christianity, the practical application of what it is to be a Christian.

IT IS NOT:

  • Growing membership.
  • A classroom teachings.
  • Simply a part of Christianity.

Christian Discipleship is when a discipler involves his life to teach, help, guide and lead someone to Christ until he reach full maturity in Him.

The Beginning

Christian Discipleship can probably be traced back at the time of Jesus when he first called the twelve disciples. The twelve disciples of Jesus helped him in his 3 years of ministerial work. We know that even Judas Iscariot helped him in those years.

The idea  is all about making followers of Jesus Christ. It is about sharing the gospel to other people by words and actions so that other people will follow Christ.

Discipleship however did not started at the time of Jesus. Moses as a the leader of Israelites discipled Joshua. Eli discipled Samuel, Elijah to Elisha, etc. Discipleship existed even at in the Old Testament Times. And the same idea has been reinforced and taught by Jesus Christ himself.

Christian Discipleship Goal

Christian discipleship aims to share the gospel of Christ to all kinds of people, making them followers or what we call disciples of Christ. The whole idea is found in Matthew 28:18-20:

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

It  is so huge that we need to help one another as a Christian to fulfill the great commission.
